SF: Yale Professor Akhil Reed Amar - Exclusive Talk on America's Constitution

Talk Title: “The Law of the Land: America’s Written and Unwritten Constitution.” Akhil Reed Amar is Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale University, where he teaches constitutional law at both Yale College and Yale Law School.

In this talk, Professor Amar will summarize his three panoramic books on the American constitutional experience--America's Constitution: A Biography (2005); America’s Unwritten Constitution: The Precedents and Principles We Live By (2012); and his newly released book, The Law of the Land: A Grand Tour of Our Constitutional Republic.

His talk will pay particularly close attention to the ways in which geography, federalism, and regionalism have influenced some of the biggest questions in American constitutional law—for example,  how Abraham Lincoln’s ideas about secession were influenced by his Midwestern upbringing and outlook, and how certain key states have played an outsized role in the electoral college over the centuries.  Closer to home, Professor Amar will also discuss Justice Anthony Kennedy’s rich vision of constitutional equality.  Is it a mere coincidence that  the Republican appointee on the current Supreme Court who has most consistently embraced gay rights is someone who grew up here in Northern California, a corner of the country renowned for its respect for alternative lifestyles?

This talk is open to all Yalies. Light refreshments will be served.
