This spring, CUGALA is honoring founding member, Arthur (Art) Leonard ‘74, with the Siegel Award.

Arthur S. Leonard, a professor at New York Law School since 1982, graduated from Cornell (ILR '74) and Harvard Law School ('77) and is a member of the NY Bar Association.  Leonard started New York’s LGBT Law Association (1978) and served as its first elected president (1984-1988).  He edits the Association’s monthly newsletter, Lesbian/Gay Law Notes, which is archived on NY Law School’s Impact Center website. In 2005 he received the Dan Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award from the National LGBT Law Association.

Professor Leonard is an extraordinary community leader and has also been a director or trustee of Lambda Legal Defense & Education Fund, The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies at City University of NY (CLAGS), The Society of American Law Teachers, and Congregation Beit Simchat Torah (CBST - the world’s largest LGBT synagogue), among others.

While at Cornell, Art was a classical concert reviewer for four years on the Cornell Daily Sun Review Board, Editor of the ILR Forum and a member of the Cornell Symphony Orchestra.

He and his partner of more than three decades, Tim Nenno, married in Connecticut in 2009.
