FLAGS (Fund for Lesbian and Gay Studies) awards are available to Yale faculty, graduate students, and professional school students. Grants are made in support of research, publication, and course development.

Prior Awards:  

Eleven Yale University LGBT Studies Prizes (aka "FLAGS Prizes") were Awarded Fall 2016: 


  • SD Boulware, M.D., Yale Gender Center to create “Supportive Families, Healthy Children” pamphlet for the Center’s Family Acceptance Project and Gender Spectrum

  • T.L. Cowan for wide-ranging LGBT research from Canada to Mexico
  • Alexandra DeBranco for New Right Movement research
  • Jason Douglas for travel to Japan to study the film Kimi no nawa
  • Ron Gregg for the study of Post-WWII queer avant-garde film
  • Navin Kumar for research on male sex workers
  • Greta LaFleur for work on her book The Natural History of Sexuality
  • Oana Marian for research on cultural representations of queerness in India
  • John Pachankis for LGBT mental health research
  • Nicole Silkin for work on gender affirming surgery health outcomes
  • Svetlana Tcarera for research on the 2013 Russian gay propaganda law and culture


There are other programs -- such as the Yale LGBT Studies Research Fellowship (application deadline April 17, 2017) -- that are open to scholars not currently enrolled at Yale.
